Spinathon 2.0 is coming in April. Help raise positive vibes for mental health.
We lead community coalitions that build healthier environments for young people, through education, local data, and partnerships that catalyze lasting change.
Community-based | Youth-focused | Data-driven
Prevention science is a public health model that focuses on creating change at the community level, not just the individual one. It starts with a Community Coalition of 12 stakeholder sectors that work together: youth and parent volunteers, and designated partners from local institutions such as schools, police, treatment centers, and other concerned groups. Positive Directions brings prevention leadership to these coalitions, building members’ capacity, gathering data, coordinating meetings, providing training, leading initiatives, and securing the grants that keep the work funded.
The Strategic Prevention Framework, a planning model from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), organizes the work into five steps:
Research shows prevention works best when it combines individual, community, and environmental strategies. Our coalition work aims to amplify the individual efforts already happening through schools, houses of worship, and community groups; fill community gaps in awareness, support, and education; and drive environmental change in areas like local ordinances, signage, policy, and enforcement.
Coalition work depends on people who show up. Join us.
